Bricks itself after a year, September 28, 2012 By Scott R. (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: VirusBarrier X6 2-User (CD-ROM) I've been a long-standing user of VirusBarrier, since it was also a separate collection of products (NetBarrier and VirusBarrier). It has, I suppose, worked well enough, though I can't point to a specific incident where it has saved me. But I was OK with the idea of prevention. Until I discovered that they've changed their business model to what is essentially software rental: your purchase entitles you to one year's use, after which the software literally becomes useless, totally non-functional. I discovered this when I attempted to open the application and it told me I had to make another $30 purchase in order to use it. So I wrote to them; below is the back and forth, in part.
"I've been using VirusBarrier since before there was an OS X version, counting its NetBarrier origins.
When I launched my copy of Virusbarrier X6 today, I was told that my subscription had expired.

I probably prefer the Norton interface over the VirusBarrier interface, but both products seem to do what you intend (stop viruses and malware).
When you purchase it, you have to register it online and then they email you an activation code. Until you get the code, the program will not work, so I recommend getting the code before you uninstall any prior anti-virus program you have.
This product includes VirusBarrier for 2 Mac computers and 1 "Panda" for Windows. Why they don't include 2 and 2 is beyond me, apparently they think you'll have one Mac with Windows on it and one without??
Anyway, the Panda is a joke. It may as well be a virus, because I installed it on the Windows 7 portion of my Mac and Windows 7 slowed to a crawl (actually more of a standstill). I had Norton installed previously and Windows was very fast. But with Panda I can't even run any programs. Ironically I can't even get the... Read more
